A City Transformed

Kitchener has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade. What was once known primarily for its manufacturing roots has emerged as a major technology hub, home to Google's largest Canadian engineering office, homegrown tech giants like OpenText and D2L, and hundreds of startups. Rich German Heritage

The city's German roots run deep. Settled by Pennsylvania Dutch (Deutsch) immigrants in the early 1800s, the area was originally called Berlin and remained predominantly German until World War I. Getting Around

The ION LRT has transformed transit in the region, running every 10 minutes on weekdays between Conestoga in Waterloo and Fairway Station in Kitchener. Grand River Transit (GRT) operates a comprehensive bus network with iXpress rapid routes along major corridors. Highway 401 and Highway 85 provide easy access to Toronto (about an hour's drive) and surrounding communities.

Parks & Recreation

Victoria Park, opened in 1896, remains the city's most beloved green space with its iconic lake, heritage pavilion, and year-round events including the Roos Island Music Series and Christmas Fantasy. Chicopee Ski & Summer Resort offers skiing, snowboarding, and summer tubing just minutes from downtown.
